Trauma and the Body: Why You Feel “Stuck” and How to Begin Healing

Trauma isn’t just something that happened in the past—it’s something your body may still be holding onto.

When you experience trauma, your nervous system can get “stuck” in survival mode (fight, flight, or freeze). Even when you’re safe, your body may react as if you’re still in danger.

This can show up as:

  • Feeling on edge or easily triggered

  • Emotional numbness

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Intrusive thoughts or memories

Why the Body Matters

Traditional talk therapy is helpful, but trauma is also stored physically. That’s why body-based approaches (like grounding and EMDR) are so effective.

Simple Ways to Reconnect with Your Body

1. Orienting Exercise
Slowly look around the room and name objects. This signals safety to your brain.

2. Temperature Change
Hold something cold (like an ice pack) or splash cold water on your face. This can interrupt overwhelming emotional states.

3. Gentle Movement
Stretching, walking, or even shaking out your hands can help release stored tension.

Healing from trauma is not about “getting over it.” It’s about helping your body learn that it’s safe again.
